Admiring the Mile High skyline

BlogDog revels in the dramatic view of the Mile High skyline from Barnum Park, on W. 5th and Hooker Aves.

The park, named after PT. Barnum of circus fame, is one of only six off-leash dog parks in Denver.

So after enjoying the view, BlogDog ran free, mixing it up with the retrievers and schnauzers. Good times for BlogDog!

Recognizing Cesar Chavez Day

Today, the last Monday in March, Denver observed Cesar Chavez Day.

Chavez (1927-1993) was a Mexican-American organizer and co-founder of the United Farm Workers Union who worked tirelessly to improve the conditions of migrant farm workers throughout the West. The city of Denver has named a park and building in his honor and he is a hero in many communities.

For those not familiar with this important activist, the holiday is cool because the parking meters are free for the day.

Nothing strange going on at Lucile's

Lucile's Creole Cafe at 275 S. Logan St. is a brunch hot spot. The food is tasty, the portions are huge and there is always a wait.

The lengthy wait allows plenty of time to indulge in mimosas, which could explain why no one seemed to notice when Matt and Mary carefully posed BlogDog in front of the restaurant and snapped his picture.

Whizzing wheeled women season kicks off tonight

No one can say Denver is not a big city, when we've got our own roller derby league, the Denver Roller Dolls! Their opening home extravaganza of the season is tonight, inside the Fillmore Auditorium where BlogDog visited today.

BlogDog doesn't usually react well to people on roller blades or skateboards (think growling and barking,) so he was removed from the area
before the Dolls showed up.

Come, Bloggy, come: Weekend Doggie Double

At home, BlogDog spends much of his time napping -- but take him outside and he shifts into a different gear.

He showed off two gears today on the Auraria Campus, home of Community College of Denver, Metropolitan State College of Denver, and University of Colorado, Denver.

Here's BlogDog in "Oh, you want me to come? Sure, why not?" low gear --

and here's "I am focusing every fiber of my being on coming!" high gear.

Two dogs and two cows in the snow

BlogDog and his new Buddy of the Week , Chandler, did not let today's blizzard stop them from checking out local public art.

They posed for pictures* in front of the 13-foot tall Scottish Angus Cow and Calf by Dan Ostermiller, located south of the Denver Art Museum.

It's a little hard to see BlogDog in the picture. With the heavy, blowing snow, it was a little hard to see him in real life as well.

* Special thanks to guest photographers Dan and B for the photo!

Sunset on the Fax

Colfax Ave., technically 15 Ave., has a proud history. Once grand, this longest commercial street in the country, featured in Jack Kerouac's "On the Road," fell into disrepair in the 70's.

Although Denver has put time and money into its revitalization, and many locals love the street, it is still not really what most people would call beautiful. Except tonight, with the setting sun, it almost was.

A wet Monday morning

It was a cold, wet Monday morning. BlogDog is always eager to go for a walk, but today he also seemed ready to get home.

When they got back inside, Matt generously offered to share his fresh brewed coffee. BlogDog was not the least bit interested.

Bow wow, it's a pow wow

BlogDog visited the Denver Coliseum at Humbolt St. and I-70 for the 35th Annual Denver March PowWow.

While most of the pow-ing and wow-ing went on inside the building, BlogDog was able to catch occasional glimpses of what he was missing. Check out the guy on the far right side of the photo.

Pet me, jazz lovers!

The third annual Jazz Fest Denver is going on this weekend at Dazzle Resturant and Lounge on Lincoln and 9th St.

BlogDog kept a lookout for any approaching attendees who might want to pet a cute dog.

Dancing with wolves: The Weekend Doggie Double

Here at mydogindenverdaily.com, we are excited to introduce a new feature -- the Weekend Doggie Double.

Everyone's got more time on the weekend. What better way to spend it than taking an extra moment with your favorite Denver-based internet pal, BlogDog!

Every Friday, we will post not one -- but two -- pictures of BlogDog in the same location. That's twice the BlogDog fun to enjoy with your Saturday coffee and internet check!

BlogDog looked right at home with the wolves outside the Denver Museum of Nature and Science.

The only difference was that he has to wear a leash.

And the wolves are a little meaner looking.

Look, up above!

Denver's Stapleton International Airport closed in 1995. The land was redeveloped into a pedestrian-friendly, eco-friendly residential and commercial community that BlogDog visited.

Although the airport has been closed for 14 years, BlogDog thought something in the sky was really interesting.

BlogDog and a big, happy leprechaun (Denver celebrates St. Patrick's Day, the final episode)

BlogDog keeps his holidays pretty PG. No green beer or "Kiss Me. I'm Irish" buttons for him.

An extra-long walk with a stop by the inflatable leprechaun made for a good St. Patrick's Day for this pooch.

Chilling out in front of the TV (station)

While posing in front of the Channel 7 News building on Speer Blvd., BlogDog took a pause from his extended celebration of St. Patrick's Day.

While BlogDog loves to be in on the action, it's hard to overstate the pleasure of laying in the warm sun.

The Running of the Green (Denver celebrates St. Patrick's Day, part 2)

BlogDog thinks: "Oh, the Running of the Green is very exciting!"

"It's the biggest 7K race in the country. It's in downtown Denver. Lots of runners sport festive green outfits. And they allow dogs on the course!"

March 14, 2009

Denver celebrates St. Patrick's Day, part 1

BlogDog isn't familiar with all the festivities surrounding St. Patrick's Day.

Today, at the parade in Denver, he was a bit confounded by the crowds, music and strange little green stuffed dogs.

Waiting at the Wazee Super Club

The Wazee Super Club, at the corner of Wazee and 15 St., has been serving burgers, pizza and beer since before LoDo was trendy. The food is tasty and the atmosphere is unpretentious.

It's totally BlogDog's scene -- or, it would be if he was allowed inside.

The best thing about the history museum

BlogDog visited the Colorado History Museum. This museum, run by the Colorado Historic Society, hosts a wealth of compelling exhibits about BlogDog's home state.

Currently, the "Imagine a Great City: Colorado at 150" exhibit details the development of the Mile High City during the past century and a half.

According to BlogDog, there is also a great picnic area for finding scraps of food dropped by messy picnic-ers.

Tequila sunset at Benny's

BlogDog basked in the sunset at Benny's Restaurante y Tequila Bar on 7th Ave. and Grant St this evening.

If you are anywhere near Denver and like strong margaritas and cheap burritos, you must go too. Just plan on walking home.

The spirit of the Rocky Mountains

BlogDog enjoyed the view of the snow-capped mountains from the pavilion in Cheeseman Park.

Though he was inspired to express his Rocky Mountain spirit and run free, he has heard from several sources that the city has stepped up its enforcement of leash laws. So, he kept his collar securely on.

Sprung ahead

Early Sunday morning, Colorado residents, along with most of the rest of the country, sprung their clocks ahead an hour for daylight savings time.

The extra sixty minutes of light are lovely in the evening. But it sure does make it dark if you are out walking at 7 am.

March 7, 2009

Bringing truth to the people

BlogDog visited the offices of the Westword, Denver's alternative weekly newspaper, to pitch a story about the liberal media's bias against the legitimate sport of squirrel hunting.

They were closed for the weekend, but BlogDog plans to return another day. He has not given up hope on seeing this powerful expose reach print.

March 6, 2009

Yeah, they are always this cute...

Animal buddy stories are ridiculously cute. BlogDog and his buddy Baxter are cute together too.

Some people might argue they were slightly less cute as they wrestled each other to the ground and chewed on each other's neck.

A little dog and a big mansion

As the sun went down, BlogDog posed gracefully in front of the Grant-Humphreys Mansion, located in the north-east corner of Governor's Park.

This 30-room mansion, which was built for $35,000 in 1902, is available
for rental for private functions.

BlogDog wondered if he could rent it for his next birthday celebration -- until he realized his buddies would be much happier running around the park.

It's Wednesday and you are probably wondering, "Where was BlogDog Wednesday?"

There are many ways to appreciate art

BlogDog visited the Fredric C. Hamilton Building at the Denver Art Museum. This 2006 addition was designed by architect Daniel Libeskind.

Many people visit the museum to view the building's striking geometric design and titanium-clad exterior. Others are eager to see the carefully-curated collections. BlogDog was more keen on sniffing around.

A walk in a Denver wonderland

BlogDog today, as he enjoyed the daffodils and 74 degree weather in Denver : "I know you have lots of friends back East. But, please, do not even joke about moving."

West High School wonderland

The track at West High School offers a nice view of the skyline of the Golden Triangle neighborhood.

Although this may not be the most breathtaking view or the toniest zip code in the city, BlogDog spent a lovely Sunday afternoon there, hanging out with people he likes -- and there was no place in the world he would have rather been.
