Quiet time with MLK

During a walk in City Park, Mary and BlogDog spent some time at the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Memorial.

They were both impressed by this monument. Designed by sculptor Ed Dwight, the memorial recognizes not only Dr. King, but many other prominent people in the civil rights movement.

Mary was glad she had a chance to check it out at her own pace now, without the crowds and parades that accompany the holiday in January.

For dogs that oughta be in pictures

BlogDog aims to purchase all his holiday gifts this season from local Denver vendors.

BlogDog asked Meredith at Mega Pet Portraits in Denver to paint a 5 x 7" portrait of his cousin Kyla as a gift for Kyla's parents.

BlogDog hopes one day someone will buy him a 30 x 40" portrait of himself. He thinks it would look so handsome over the fireplace.

Approaching the longest day of the year

BlogDog visited Berkeley dog park on 46th and Sheridan. It was only a few minutes after 5 pm, but the park was empty and dark. The headlights from the cars on I-70 shone in the background.

BlogDog and Mary longed for the summer days when a dog can romp in the sunlight until 9 pm.

BlogDog kicks off Christmas

BlogDog doesn't appreciate when retailers rush the holiday season. He strongly believes Christmas decorations should not be hung in October.

He insisted that no wreaths or lights appear on his blog until the day after Thanksgiving!

November 26, 2009

A playful Thanksgiving

BlogDog didn't make it very far from home on this holiday. He spent the day around the house and then got a little post-turkey exercise with his Uncle Brett.

BlogDog hopes all his family, friends and fans had as peaceful and enjoyable a day.

Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

Welcome to the holiday edition of "Where was BlogDog Wednesday?"

You can be sure that today BlogDog was getting ready for the eating festival tomorrow. Do you recognize this little market bursting with fruits and vegetables?

I could fly higher than an eagle

BlogDog visited the Wings Over the Rockies Air and Space Museum. There were all sorts of areonautical rarities, including a B-18A Bolo, RF-84K Thunderflash Parasite and other planes Matt could tell you a lot about if you ever want to know.

BlogDog investigated the giant plane outside. He closed his little eyes, pulled back his ears and imagined what it would be like to fly.

Norse warriors in the Highlands

Denver North High School, Home of the Vikings, is located on Speer Blvd. across from Viking Park.

BlogDog was confused about what Scandinavian warriors who raided Europe 1,000 years ago have to do with a high school in the Rockies. Mary explained the nickname was just symbolic. She then tried to explain what "symbolic" meant -- but finally gave up and distracted BlogDog with a treat.

Forget the halls decked with holly

Six decked-to-the-max homes in the Lowry neighborhood opened their doors this weekend for the L’Esprit de Noel Holiday Home Tour to benefit the Central City Opera.

Although festive decorations are nice, BlogDog was more interested in the comfort of the rugs and the likelihood the owners would let a nice dog curl up on the couch.

Where the wildlife are

BlogDog toured through Fairmont Cemetery in southwest Denver this afternoon.

Unlike the scary cemetery visited the day after Halloween, this final resting place was quite lovely. He later found out that the grounds were recently designated a Colorado Wildlife Viewing location by the Division of Wildlife. Deer, fox, coyote, hawk, eagle and owl as well and numerous small birds are frequently spotted there.

This made him like the place even more.

November 20, 2009

I'm available for french toast

BlogDog was tempted by the specials at The Eggshell at 300 Josephine St. so he decided to get a jump on the weekend and enjoy a relaxing brunch.

His schedule allows that sort of spontaneity.

November 19, 2009

Sunset at Sanchez Park

Matt and BlogDog headed west from downtown to Sanchez Park this afternoon.

They enjoyed the lingering snow and setting sun until two giant German Shepherds Matt swears were "about to leap over the chain link fence and take out BlogDog" ran them off.

Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

It's Wednesday and time to try to answer the question, "Where was BlogDog Wednesday?"

There are lots of places to buy antiques in Denver, but do you identify where this shop is located?

In the moment

Some days, BlogDog pauses and thinks about how lucky he is to get to see so many parts of this cool city.

November 16, 2009

Truly a treat

Sometimes what a girl needs when the ice and snow linger is a cute new pair of shoes. True Love offers a highly stylish selection at a prices that make it easy to indulge.

BlogDog feels good at this vegan shoe shop because, as they put it, "No animals are harmed in our pursuit of making you fashionable."

All eyes on the one brave soul who came out in the snow

The Sunken Gardens park at 8th and Speer was quiet and peaceful this morning. The snow obscured downtown's skyscrapers and only a few cars crawled along Speer Blvd. Even the squirrels seemed to be tucked into their little squirrel-beds, drinking coffee and eating nuts.

Of course, BlogDog quickly locked onto the one furry guy who had stepped out of his tree house to get the paper.

November 14, 2009

Great attention to a little plot of land

Mary and BlogDog were strolling through the Baker neighborhood, looking at all the old, beautiful and slightly run-down houses.

They came across this little yard which contained a bird bath, rubber duckie, Bugs Bunny figures, several dinosaurs, a few toy cars and many more things which are hard to see in this picture. It was quite odd and, yet, kind of touching.

November 13, 2009

Oh, the crowds! The crowds?

BlogDog missed the opening festivities of the Denver Film Society/Starz Denver Film Festival held downtown last night.

He made an appearance this afternoon at the Starz FilmCenter at the Tivoli on the Auraria Campus where today's showings were being held, but the hoopla had died down and nobody recognized him. It was almost like he wasn't really a celebrity.

November 12, 2009

So, what should I look for in a ball?

Sports Plus, at 1055 S. Gaylord Street, deals in new and used sporting equipment.

BlogDog thought he would see if he could pick up an assortment of balls for a good price. He imagined owners Mike and Gary may know a thing or two about quality, used gear, as they have been in business for 25 years -- at least three times as long as BlogDog has been alive.

Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

It's time for another edition of "Where was BlogDog Wednesday?," your chance to see if you know the ins and outs of the Mile High City.

Before click here to find out the answer or click on the image to enlarge it and read the awning, take a moment to see if you can identify this Denver dining delight.

In honor of their service

In recognition of the holiday tomorrow, BlogDog visited Denver's Veteran's Memorial.

Located in Civic Center Park since 1990, this tower serves as a memorial to the proud men and women who have served in our military.

BlogDog would have saluted them if he could, but his paws don't move that way.

November 9, 2009

Here's hoping for 200,000 miles

The Downing Street Garage, tucked in a residential neighborhood on 4th and Downing, prides itself on its strong ethics and environmental practices.

The mechanics there have revived Mary and Matt's car from sickness to health on more than one occasion.

"Keep up the good work," thought BlogDog as he posed out front.

November 8, 2009

Stitched with love

The Stiles African-American Heritage Center, at 26th and Glenarm, was hosting a quilting exhibit this afternoon. The Rocky Mountain Wa Shonaji Quilt Guild members and other quilters put their designs on display.

Some of BlogDog's favorite people are quilters, so he thought he would show his support for the craft.

November 7, 2009

Bark heard around the world

BlogDog made it to Wash Park for the Dogzilla Bark Heard Around the World event. The event was a fundraiser for local shelters and attempt to help break the world record for loudest bark by a group of dogs.

BlogDog doesn't bark unless a skateboarder is rolling by, so he didn't contribute much to the barking efforts. But he hammed it up for the camera with 20-foot inflatable dog.

Call me a patron of the arts

Denver Arts Week kicked off today. For the next seven days, galleries, museums and performance centers around the city are offering special programs and tour to help promote the Denver's arts scene.

As Denver's most popular dog-about-town, BlogDog wanted to do his part to support this week-long gala. He decided to visit some public art, at the intersection of Broadway and Blake. This installation is part of a three piece series by Joesph Riche titled Trade Deficit.

Try a little harder, BlogDog

Regular readers of mydogindenverdaily.com know that BlogDog has a strong hunting drive for squirrels. In an experiment to see if they could channel BlogDog's instinct to a more civilized and perhaps profitable pursuit, Matt and Mary encouraged BlogDog to route out truffles.

He was very good at routing, but was unable to identify a single truffle.

They were not sure if there was a weakness in BlogDog's technique -- or a lack of truffles in Fuller Park.

It's as simple as 1, 2, 3

BlogDog paused by the posters pasted to the wall on 12th and Santa Fe for "This Is It," the Michael Jackson tribute movie.

BlogDog is ambivalent about all of Jackson's later works -- but, really, is there a creature alive who doesn't start grooving when "ABC," by the Jackson Five comes on the radio?

Paint your own food bowl

If you are looking for fun way to pass the afternoon, consider stopping by Ceramics in the City.

Mary is quite fond of this paint-your-own pottery place on 19th and Pearl. You can bring in food and wine. The music is relaxing. And you end up with something useful you can enjoy or give as a gift.

A very important object in BlogDog's life came from this shop -- his hand-painted food bowl. Mary thought that if BlogDog understood this, he might have shown a little more enthusiasm for the place.

Adventures in a graveyard the day after Halloween

Yesterday, the Friends of Riverside Cemetery offered a guided tour of the longest continually operating cemetery in the state, founded in 1876. The group is trying to bring attention to this neglected location, which is the final resting place of some big names in Colorado history, including territorial governors – John Evans, Samuel Elbert, and John Routt.

BlogDog was otherwise engaged with gorillas yesterday, so he and Mary thought they should check out this National Historic District on their own today.

So, this dog-girl duo drove north out of downtown, in Mary's clunker of a car, through the deserted warehouse district, to check out the dilapidated cemetery. As they crossed the rickety rail road tracks and turned down the dirt road, Mary noticed only one other car on the 77-acre site.

Even in broad daylight on this sunny day, she felt as if she were in a bad creepy movie. After a few quick pictures, they jumped into Mary's jalopy and zipped back to more vibrant parts of Denver.
