A difference of opinion at the Esquire

BlogDog was eager to see "Unmistaken Child" at the Esquire Theater on 6th and Downing tonight. He tried to convince Mary and Matt to take him to the 9:30 pm show.

They thought 9:30 pm was too late. BlogDog disagreed, arguing that he could sleep in tomorrow since he had the day off.

BlogDog goes food shopping

Tony's Market is a cool, relatively new addition to the Capital Hill/Golden Triangle neighborhoods. This location, at 950 Broadway, is the fifth store in the Colorado-based chain.

BlogDog went to check out the daily specials posted in front of the store. He read the sign -- Blah, blah, boring, boring, MEAT!, Chicken!, Meatloaf!, Beef!, blah, blah.

Those readers who know Matt will know that he read the sign the exact same way.

Out and about at PrideFest

BlogDog was eager to check out Denver's PrideFest, which is considered to be one of the top 10 pride events in the nation, going on at Civic Center Park this weekend.

He didn't know what to make of the scene at first. But everyone was having a blast and lots of people pet him -- so it was a successful event by his standards!

Lights, camera, Cherry Blossom shopping

Today, Mary and BlogDog visited the Cherry Blossom Festival, a celebration of Japanese-American culture in downtown Denver.

Paper lanterns fluttered overhead and Japanese dancers performed on stage. Booths with Japanese trinkets and gifts lined the street.

Temperatures were in the low 80s, but it seemed much hotter on the asphalt between 19th and 20th on Larimer. BlogDog was pulling and straining to grab a moment of shade under every table.

Mary must have been affected by the sun as well. She set the camera to "video" instead of "auto" and couldn't understand why she wasn't able to review the images. Only after dragging BlogDog out from under the tables and away from the festival did she realize she had not taken even one photograph -- but had a series of rather dull videos, such as the one above.

Sharing a moment with Kya: Weekend Doggie Double

BlogDog is buddies with the beautiful Rhodesian Ridgeback in the neighborhood, Kya. They have know each other for nearly five years.
When they spend time together, they don't play or wrestle much. Their friendship is more about sharing common interests --like squirrels.

Keep the cute dog

BlogDog posed patiently on 16th St. in the Highlands while Mary snapped away, trying to capture the downtown Denver skyline, visible in the background.

She lacks the skill and the technology create a great image -- but she isn't worried. After all, there may be better photographs of the Denver skyline, but there aren't any with a cuter pup in the foreground.

Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

Today was
Bike to Work Day in Colorado.

Residents were encouraged to hop on two wheels and pedal to their place of employment. They were enticed by aid stations set up along the way offering free coffee and doughnuts. More than 30,000 riders participated.

In the spirit of Bike to Work Day, BlogDog visited the location pictured above. Can you look at the picture and figure out, Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

Look yonder, my bison buddy

As the sun set this evening, BlogDog stood stoically, looking out over the scene before him.

With an American bison over his shoulder and the prairie grasses blowing gently, BlogDog almost forgot he was on the corner of Broadway and 13th.

Stop and smell the football field

BlogDog hit the track at South High School, located at 1700 E. Louisiana Ave.

With his dark coat and the hot sun, he wasn't inspired to complete too many laps. He quickly shifted from a run to a walk to stopping completely to sniff the lush, green grass.

Just thinking about a gyro

The Denver Greek Festival , which took place this weekend at the Greek Orthodox church at 4610 E. Alameda Ave., offered festival-goers Greek song and dance, tours of the church's gold dome and lots of delicacies.

Mary was excited to sample the spanakopita and dolmathes, while BlogDog licked his lips for some souvlakia.

Satisfaction on Speer

Desperate for some color and festiveness on a dreary Saturday, BlogDog brought his new bone to Alamo Placita Park, at Speer Blvd. and Downing St.

It was like a having his own doggie picnic.

Getting wild at the lakeside: Weekend Doggie Double

Sloan's Lake, just off Sheridan Ave. on the western edge of Denver, offers 177 acres of water to boaters and a 2.6 mile perimeter trail to those on foot.

For those on four legs, there are enough geese and squirrels to make it an exciting place to visit -- at least it sure was for BlogDog.

Good place to get the 411 on 911

The Denver Firefighters Museum is located off the beaten path in downtown Denver at 1326 Tremont St. You can visit to learn about the history of the Denver fire department -- or you can host your kid's birthday party there for $6 a head.

The museum does not allow in food, beverages, bags larger than 11" x 17" inches or pets -- but BlogDog had already gotten the scoop from another Denver blogger's review of the museum so he wasn't too upset about missing the inside. In fact, it seemed as if he was just as happy to keep walking.

BlogDog recomends 7th Avenue

When word gets around the park that BlogDog has travelled the city, he is often asked, "BlogDog, where is the best place for a walk?"

Now, BlogDog cannot decide on a favorite place to walk -- anywhere he can sniff around, he loves.

But he usually responds that one of the most lovely places to run is the 7 Avenue Parkway through Congress Park.

The historic mansions that line the street are gorgeous. The avenue is wide and offers a dedicated bike path. The median, where BlogDog posed for this photo with his most dignified look, bursts with colorful flowers in the spring.

Big scoop for me, Little Man!

Matt, Mary and BlogDog visited 2620 16th Ave. in the Highlands, home of Little Man Ice Cream, a company that prides itself on making a difference in its community -- and that serves darn good ice cream.

Not grey clouds nor imminent thundershowers could convince Mary it was not a great day for ice cream.

In all honesty -- not sure what it would take to convince Mary it was not a good day for ice cream.

You know it's time to leave the book sale...

The Denver Public Library Friends Foundation held its annual used book sale this weekend. There were tents full of books priced at $3 or less and boxes of VHS tapes free to anyone who would take them.

BlogDog was getting lots of attention and enjoying the scene. However, Matt insisted they make a rapid departure when it seemed that BlogDog was about to mistake a box of tapes for a fire hydrant.

June 13, 2009

I'm ready to rock

BlogDog hung around the will call tent of the Westword Music Showcase, a one-day, 50-band festival in the Golden Triangle neighborhood.

He got lots of attention and petting, but no one tossed him a free ticket.

Priorities: Weekend Doggie Double

Matt and Mary like to think they are the center of BlogDog's world. They imagine him running over mountains through a snow storm to be with them (a la Benji or Lassie.)

So, it was a little disappointing when they called him and he began to run passionately down the Highline Canal Trail towards them -- but decided he would rather sniff grass.

Any place named after a dog has got to be good

BlogDog stopped at The Irish Hound on St. Paul St., just off 6th Ave.

He was hoping to have a word with the owner about naming his next place The Mellow Mutt.

Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

Welcome! It's Wednesday, the day when you get to test your knowledge of Denver scenery and try to identify, Where was BlogDog Wednesday?

BlogDog himself looks a little puzzled about his whereabouts in this picture. But don't worry -- there aren't a whole lot of gold domes in Denver, so this one should be easy.

For the answer, click here.

Like the Louvre, only totally different

Mona's Restaurant is a small, locally owned establishment with two locations in the city. Their original post is on 15th St. and Platte. BlogDog decided to visit their S. Broadway location.

He thought a dog should never miss the chance to see a larger than life, multi-colored version of the Mona Lisa holding a fork.

June 8, 2009

At least the shoe is as good as new

Mary had to visit Dardano's Shoes at 1550 S. Colorado Blvd to pick up a shoe that needed repair due what has become know as the "shoe breaking incident." It's a tragic tale of carelessness exacerbated by thoughtlessness, culminating in a drunken, long distance apology.

BlogDog came along for the ride, although he was tired of hearing the story.

I coulda caught a ride to Oz today

Two tornadoes touched down in the Denver metro area today. Heavy hail pelted downtown -- and hail the size of golf balls landed in Centennial.

BlogDog thought a picture of him chasing hail or in a tornado would have been awesome.

But Mary kept BlogDog tucked safely at home during these weather events and let him out only after the storm mellowed.

Artists lay down the colors in Larimer Square

Artists began to create their colorful masterpieces in the street this morning at La Piazza del Arte, a chalk art festival on Larimer Square.

Matt and Mary couldn't stop talking about how much they enjoyed the event. Admission was free, the art work was awesome and they served wine in real glasses.

BlogDog seemed to enjoy it as well, although he was quieter in his appreciation.

Blast off at the People's Fair!: Weekend Doggie Double plus

More than 250,000 people are expected to attend the Capitol Hill People's Fair this weekend in Civic Center Park. Three hundred vendors will be there offering food, crafts, music and games.

BlogDog visited the park tonight while the vendors were setting up and came across the Neutron Blast, a ride that seemed to consist of sitting in a rocket and spinning in circles.

With great stealth, he looked right...

He looked left...

And he seized the moment to experience the Neutron Blast!

Urban angles

One of cool things about cruising around the city with BlogDog is noticing how observant of his surroundings he can be. No absent-minded strolling or walking while texting for BlogDog. He applies intense focus to every scent and squirrel.

Another cool thing about travelling around the city taking pictures of BlogDog is how aware it can make you of your surroundings.

Mary must have walked by this location hundreds of times, but just recently noticed all the angles, colors and depths in this scene.

The best plan for a rainy day

One of BlogDog's greatest joys is roaming around Denver. He treasures the adventures he can have and the squirrels he can hunt in the Mile High City.

But, on a non-stop rainy, 40-degree day like today, he is happy to partake in his other great joy -- sleeping.

What? No doggie delights?

Oh, BlogDog was excited to visit D Bar Dessert and Cafe on Humbolt and E. 17th St!

He thought "D bar" stood for "Dog Bar" -- and imagined he would find a full array of canine delicacies. He was bummed to discover they offered slow service and over-priced desserts.
