Yesterday, the Friends of Riverside Cemetery offered a guided tour of the longest continually operating cemetery in the state, founded in 1876. The group is trying to bring attention to this neglected location, which is the final resting place of some big names in Colorado history, including territorial governors – John Evans, Samuel Elbert, and John Routt.
BlogDog was otherwise engaged with gorillas yesterday, so he and Mary thought they should check out this National Historic District on their own today.
So, this dog-girl duo drove north out of downtown, in Mary's clunker of a car, through the deserted warehouse district, to check out the dilapidated cemetery. As they crossed the rickety rail road tracks and turned down the dirt road, Mary noticed only one other car on the 77-acre site.
Even in broad daylight on this sunny day, she felt as if she were in a bad creepy movie. After a few quick pictures, they jumped into Mary's jalopy and zipped back to more vibrant parts of Denver.
